The Realignment of St. Anne Street

Stage 1 – Courthouse to Tache Street

The City of St. Albert is realigning St. Anne Street as the first phase of the implementation for the approved Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan (DARP). Construction will occur in two phases to minimize impact to businesses and residents, including the many festivals and events that are planned each year in these locations.

  • June to October 2015 – Construction of new road and moving of utilities
  • May to October 2016 – Changes to existing St. Anne Street to tie into new extension.

Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan


The St. Albert Downtown Redevelopment Plan (DARP) involved the participation of the Mayor and the City Council, the City of St. Albert, downtown business owners, residents, property managers, developers and the arts community. The ideas and thoughts expressed by those who have taken an active interest in the study have resulted in an inspiring and compelling plan for St. Albert’s downtown.

Amacon Grandin Mall Redevelopment

In March 2014 representatives of Amacon hosted an open house to share their new plans for the 4.2 hectare site which will include an office tower and three new high-rise residential towers each over twenty storeys tall. The development is to be a catalyst for broader downtown reinvestment, prosperity, and growth.

City of St. Albert Beautification Program

Grant Program for Businesses – You Could be Eligible for up to $2,500!

community hall petunias 2In February 2010, City Council officially endorsed the city brand “The Botanical Arts City.” The brand invites you to “Cultivate Life” in St. Albert. The commercial area beautification program will provide you with a financial incentive to “Cultivate Your Business” in St. Albert.

Studies have shown that beautification alone can increase sales between 15% and 35%. Merchants should think of the sidewalks fronting their  shops as extensions of their window displays, or as entry  halls to their stores. Beautiful settings attract people. Adding  flowers, trees and outdoor furnishings to a shopping district makes it more inviting, and encourages shoppers to stay longer.

One of the beautification components is perpendicular signage for stores. Signs placed perpendicular to the building allow drivers and pedestrians to read them easily, even from a distance. Perpendicular (blade) signs are seen ten times more frequently than facade-mounted signs. When walking down a street, face-mounted signs are less notable, and are usually first noted when a person is positioned directly in front of the business. When driving, the sign may not be noted at all. Blade signs should be decorative and should fit the architecture of your building and the ambiance of the city. Applicable to Perron District only.

Any store front business within the City that has a valid business license is eligible for the Beautification Program. Home-based businesses do not qualify.

The Perron District Committee is an active group working diligently to support the growth and prosperity of the Perron District. This committee works on strategic planning for the downtown area, and develops new initiatives for downtown improvements. Sub committees include Marketing and Communications,  Special Events, and Downtown Initiatives. Made up of downtown business owners, city of St. Albert and Chamber representatives and community and business leaders, this group meets once a month from September to June.
